Obituary of Rita Jo Solomon

Rita Jo Solomon, 80, of Morgantown, passed away early Thursday morning, April 24, 2014 at Sundale Nursing Home. She was born in Morgantown on November 20, 1933, a daughter of the late Michael Romano and the late Santina Scudiere Romano. Survivors include her three children, Michael L. Solomon and his wife Sheri, Alex Solomon and his wife Kelley and Karen Moore and her husband Joe all of Morgantown; and five grandchildren, David Robert Moore, Stephanie Michelle Moore, Lisa Anne Solomon, Michael David Solomon and Alex Philip Solomon all of Morgantown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David L. Solomon on May 25, 2007; and one sister, Barbara Romano Pisipia. Rita was a graduate of Morgantown High School and attended West Virginia University. She was a Boy Scout leader for her son Michael, a Cub Scout leader for her son Alex, and a Girl Scout leader for her daughter Karen when they were growing up. She was instrumental in organizing a successful movement for the installation of sidewalks along Collins Ferry Rd. so that children may safely walk to school. Mrs. Solomon was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Star City, the Catholic Daughters of America League of Women Voters, and volunteer for riding for the handicapped for several years and served as a tutor for the blind. She was a member of the Pines Country Club where she was the President and Program Chairwoman of the Ladies Golf Association and helped to start the 9 Hole Group. She was also a member of the PGA Florida National Golf Club for 25 years. Rita was the co-chairperson of the Monongalia General Hospital Ball of the Year, and co-wrote a cookbook to benefit that cause. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Sunday, April 27th from 1-5 PM. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held in the funeral home Sunday afternoon at 4:30 PM to conclude the visitation. On Monday, April 28th, Mrs. Soloman will be moved to St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Star City, where she will lay in repose from 10 Am until the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM with Father John V. DiBacco as celebrant. She will be entombed with her husband at St. Mary’s Peace Garden Mausoleum. At the request of the deceased, her casket will remained closed throughout the visitation. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Solomon’s name may be made to St. Ursula’s Food Pantry, PO Box 18, Pursglove, WV 26546.
