Anna "Anne" Kuhn Smith

Anna "Anne" K. Smith, 93, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Harmony at Morgantown. Anne was born on June 6, 1933, and was the youngest child of the late Matthias and Margaret Ganz Kuhn.

Anne attended St. Francis grade school, graduated from Morgantown High – Class of 1951 – she later chaired several class reunions. She attended WVU and later graduated from Palm Beach, FL Junior College as a Registered Nurse. Over the years, she had worked at St. Mary’s in West Palm Beach, Vincent Pallotti Hospital, Ruby Memorial Hospital, and the Monongalia County Health Department. She was very proud of the care she provided for all her patients.

An avid WVU fan, she held season tickets for football, men's and women’s basketball and enjoyed tailgates and some bowl game trips. She was artistic – gifted at calligraphy, doing many wedding invitations for delighted brides; and painted the Noah’s Ark mural at St. Mary’s Church. Her loves were: family, travel – including three trips to Hawaii, scrapbooking, crossword puzzles, looking thru cookbooks for new recipes, gardening, both vegetables and flowers – very proud to have moved her ‘Queen Ann’ rose bush to 3 different properties over the years and it is still blooming today, fresh summer tomatoes, Peanuts comic strips and had declared the characters as ‘her people’, dogs – especially her beloved ‘Missy’ and every single dog who was walked on Fenwick Ave. She sent beautiful greeting cards and remembered birthdays and special occasions.

Music was always present in her life. She had a beautiful voice – whether participating in the WVU Choral Union and Community Choir for forty years or as a faithful active member of St. Mary’s Church as a cantor or in the adult, contemporary and funeral choirs. She was elated at having had the opportunity to travel and sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City, Constitution Hall in Washington, DC and in Vienna, Austria. She could always break out a song.

At St. Mary’s Church, she served on Parish Pastoral Council, chaired Activities Committee, was a CRHP leader as well as a member of the Catholic Daughters Court Ursula. Her faith was an important part of her life. She also volunteered her time with Summer Special Olympics, Vacation Bible School and doing blood pressures at the mall for Red Cross.

She is survived by her daughter, Debra and her husband Rev. William Batson of Knoxville, TN; granddaughter, Kylie and her husband Matthew Gentry of Englewood, TN; great-grandchildren, Matthew Gentry, Charlotte Gentry, Maren Gentry, Arthur Munns, Gregg Munns, and Virginia Ward and their families in both Florida and Virginia; and her brother, Joe Kuhn.

In addition to her parents Anne, is preceded in death by her loving husband, William L. Smith, USAF Ret. on Oct. 9, 1977. They married on August 7, 1971. He had served in the Pacific with the Army Infantry and was recalled to active duty in 1953 with the US Air Force. He became an instructor at the Tactical Air Command Noncommissioned Officers Academy at the Langley Air Base in VA.

She is also preceded in death by her siblings, Rev. George Kuhn, Emile, Jim, Norman, Humberta Patterson, Marry Kuhn Leonard, Jerome, Austin and Kitty Krouse; stepchildren, Sandra Munns, Scott Smith and Doug Smith, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will be received at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 3346 University Ave, Morgantown, WV 26505 on Saturday, August 1, from 9:00 am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am with Rev. John P. McDonough, V.F. as celebrant, and Fr. Gary Naegele and Rev. John V. DiBacco as concelebrants. A private inurnment will take place at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens at a later date.
