Betty Lou (Nuce) Haney, age 93, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2026 at Sundale Nursing Home in Morgantown, WV. Betty was the youngest of three sisters, born on June 27, 1933 to the late Grover Nuce and Mattie (Wolfe) Nuce.
From her earliest days, Betty’s life was filled with family, music, and the simple joys of home – like the cozy fireplace in her bedroom of a small white house just outside Morgantown, along with the companionship of her cat, Blackie, her duck, Donald, and her dog, Sleepy.
Betty loved to play the piano, and by age 14 she began taking formal lessons that she continued taking for many years. She learned to play classical music from graded songbooks, teaching herself how to read and practice until she could play songs without the sheet music. Her dedication and talent were evident from an early age and music remained one of her greatest gifts.
At age 16, Betty started her first job at the Morgantown Shirt Factory, working there until she was 18. It was around that time she met her husband, Charles “Bud” Haney, at a local dance. Lively and charming, the couple was always happiest together on the dance floor. They hit it off instantly and wasted no time traveling to Oakland, Maryland, to be married. The immediate connection they shared blossomed into a beautiful, lasting love.
Betty and Charles shared 66 years of marriage. They began their family when Betty was 21, eventually raising three children: Char (born 1954), Charles, Jr. “Buddy” (born 1956), and Brett (born 1974). Though the family relocated from Morgantown, West Virginia, to Lorain, Ohio, they ultimately returned to Morgantown to be closer to Betty’s sisters, Freda Teets and Leora Hatch.
Betty and Bud loved traveling together, frequently visiting destinations like Nags Head, North Carolina, Virginia Beach, and Colonial Beach.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Char Allen (Ron) of Morgantown; sons, Charles “Buddy” Haney, Jr. (Lana) of Wakeman, OH and Brett Haney (Annette) of Mentor, OH; grandsons, Mitch Haney and Simon Haney; her very close friend, Susan Hardesty, who Betty thought of as family. Susan visited Betty almost daily, offering companionship, care, and comfort. As Susan once said, “Betty was like a mother to me”.
Betty is also survived by several nieces and nephews including, Shelley O’Hara (Mike), Patricia Diefenbach (Karl), Gary Hatch (Judy), Jennings Davis (June), and her cousin, JoAnn Barnett.
Betty Lou Haney leaves behind a legacy of hope, warmth, and love. Her greatest wish was to keep her health as long as she could, and to always hope for the well-being of her children to remain healthy and live wonderful lives. She will be remembered as an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother, whose love for music and family shaped the lives of everyone around her.
Before transitioning to Evergreen Assisted Living in Morgantown, Betty was cared for at home by a dedicated team of healthcare providers who were a true blessing to her and her family. Whether at home or in facilities, Betty's caregivers frequently shared how much they loved her—a sentiment clearly reflected in their daily actions. Their unwavering kindness, patience, and respect ensured that Betty always felt safe, valued, and deeply loved.
Betty's family is deeply grateful to the amazing teams at Sundale Nursing Home, Amedisys Hospice, and WVU Hospice. The genuine kindness and compassion they showed each day brought immense comfort to Betty and her family.
Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St. Morgantown on Monday, July 13th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 14th from 10:00am until the time of the funeral service at 11:00am with Rev. John Barnett officiating.
