Daniel Nelson Shaffer Jr.

Daniel N. Shaffer Jr. passed away on September 15, 2026, at the age of 75.

Born in Morgantown WV on March 18, 1951, Dan lived a life defined by service, loyalty, and a deep appreciation for simple pleasures. A proud United States Navy veteran, he served his country during the Vietnam War before returning home to build a life rooted in family, friendship, and community. His commitment to serving others continued long after his military service as a member of mine rescue teams, where he answered the call to help when others were in danger.

Dan was well known among fellow veterans at VFW Post 1589 Masontown WV and the American Legion Post 174, where he shared stories, laughter, and camaraderie with those he considered family and friends. As a member of VFW Post 1589, he faithfully served on the Preston County Honor Guard, standing tribute to countless fallen comrades and ensuring their service and sacrifice were remembered with dignity and respect.

Away from his service, Dan found happiness outdoors. He loved trout fishing, camping, big trucks, and relaxing on the porch with a cold beer, watching John Wayne westerns, and sharing a joke with anyone willing to listen. Dan possessed an old-school charm, a mischievous sense of humor, and a smile that made it easy for people to appreciate his generous heart, even when his candid nature caught them off guard.

Dan married Bonnie Wilhelm Shaffer atop Coopers Rock in West Virginia on September 22, 2012. Together they dreamed of adventures, enjoyed dancing, and visiting with family. Though health challenges limited some of the travels they hoped to share, their years together were marked by many cherished memories.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel N. Shaffer Sr. and Gladys Shaffer, his sister, Diane Sayre and granddaughter, Angelina Rose Yoho.

He is survived by his beloved wife of fourteen years, Bonnie Shaffer; his beloved children, Yvonne Yoho and Charlie Shaffer; his grandchildren, Shane and Clarissa Shaffer, and Gracee Yoho; and the many members of Bonnie's family whom he welcomed as his own.

He spent much of his life answering calls to serve others, whether in uniform, underground, standing beside fellow veterans to honor the fallen, wearing his Santa suit or among the people he loved most. His humor, kindness, and steadfast spirit will be deeply missed.

Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St. Morgantown on Wednesday, September 23rd from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Thursday, September 24th from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ray Frankhouser officiating. Interment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens with full military rites being conducted at the graveside.
