Dr. John Stafford Rogers, II

Dr. John Stafford Rogers II, 81, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

He was born on April 22, 1944, to the late John Stafford Rogers, MD and Dorothy Biddington Rogers in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. John grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland with his younger siblings, Anne and William Harrison.

John valued his family deeply. He married Courtney Langrall Dunlop on November 8, 1969. They were blessed with three children: Johanna, Carrie, and Stafford. John prioritized spending time with his family, worked hard to be home in time for family events, and truly enjoyed their summer vacations together.

Faith was central to John’s life from a young age. At 12, he took a Bible class and accepted Jesus as his Savior. He was active over the years in the Methodist Church, including Methodist Youth Fellowship and Stephen Ministry. More recently, alongside his wife Courtney, he hosted and led a home group Bible Study for 17 years in connection with Chestnut Ridge Church, where both were baptized and became members. After moving to Bradenton, FL, in 2017, they attended Bayside Community Church and led two Bible Studies.

John exhibited an early interest in medicine, deciding during high school to pursue a career as a physician. He received his B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Maryland in 1966 and subsequently graduated as a Medical Doctor from George Washington University Medical School in 1970. In 1973, he completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Washington Hospital Center, followed by a two-year Hematology Fellowship in Hershey, PA. He then moved to Wheeling, WV for one year, where he became an Assistant Professor of Medicine and acting Chief of Medicine at Ohio Valley Hospital.

John devoted the next 38 years of his career to delivering compassionate care at WVU Cancer Center, with a primary focus on Hematology and Lung Cancer. He also served as a faculty member at WVU School of Medicine, teaching and offering guidance to numerous medical trainees. He treated patients with blood disorders and cancer, developed a research laboratory to study coagulation problems, published numerous papers, and served as acting Chief of Hematology for two years and interim Chief of Hematology / Oncology for four years. He also developed an active clinical and research program for the treatment of Lung Cancer. Recognizing the challenging prognosis often associated with lung cancer, he offered a Christian video on the 23rd Psalm that was shared with more than 500 patients and their families.

John is survived by his wife Courtney of 56 years; children Johanna (Travis) Moreland, Carrie (Tim) Ash, and Stafford (Leslie) Rogers; grandchildren Matthew, Adam, Megan, Benjamin Moreland, Theo Ash, and Alex and Zachary Rogers; and sister Anne (Jim) Nickol. He was predeceased by his brother Harrison Rogers, sister-in-law Gingell Rogers, nephew Christopher Rogers, grandson Cameron Stafford Rogers, and his parents.

The family extends sincere gratitude to Dr. Robert Beto and Dr. Abnash Jain for their exceptional care for John following his heart attack at an earlier age.

Friends and family will be received at Chestnut Ridge Church, 2223 Cheat Rd, Morgantown, WV, on Saturday, January 17th from 11am until the time of the funeral service at 12pm, with Pastor Tim Haring officiating. Private burial will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.
