Edward Marvin Steel, Jr., 92, of Morgantown passed away April 7, 2011, after a short illness.Ed was born on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of the late Edward and Judith Wilkes Steel. He graduated from Harvard University in the class of '40. He served as a pilot in World War II and was a prisoner of war. He received his doctorate in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Steel devoted most of his career to being a professor at West Virginia University, specializing in American Social and Intellectual History. He was an author, best known for his scholarly treatment of the political life of Mother Jones. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Manley Steel, of Morgantown and a son, Philip and wife Martha, of Washington, D.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Anne. At Ed's request, there will be no services. Hastings Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
