Elaine Jean Christie

Elaine Jean Christie, 68, of Morgantown, WV, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 9, 2026, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, with her sons, Gordon and Stuart, and her lifelong friend Jill by her side.

She was born on March 20, 1957, in Haddington, Scotland, the daughter of the late William and Jean Reilly. She grew up at Mungoswells Farm in rural East Lothian, and that Scottish upbringing remained an important part of her throughout her life.

After earning her teaching degree, Elaine taught primary school in Scotland for three years. She later made her home in Morgantown with her husband, Ian, where they raised their family and built a life rooted in both West Virginia and Scotland. Elaine spent a number of years at home raising her sons while they were young, and later worked at WVU Libraries. For many years, she returned to Scotland with her family in the summers, keeping close ties to home and to friendships that began in girlhood.

Elaine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 39 years, Ian Christie, who passed away in October 2021. March 9 also marked what would have been Ian’s 74th birthday, a detail her family will always hold close.

She is survived by her sons, Gordon and his wife, Emma, and Stuart; her grandsons, Gavin and Callum; her sister, Dorothy Purves; sisters-in-law Jean and Irene, along with their husbands and children; and many dear friends in both Scotland and the United States.

Friends and family are welcome to gather at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, WV 26505, on Thursday, March 19, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The memorial service will begin at 4:00 p.m.
