Floyde Young Sharpe Stokes, 103, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Sundale Nursing Home. She was born on October 23, 1922, in Burnside Township, PA, a daughter of the late Edward P. Young and Mildren Ginn Young.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving children Susan Dotson (Lyn) of Morgantown, WV; and
Stephen Sharpe (Tina) of Westminster, MD; grandchildren Meredith Budinsky (Cole) of Avon, OH; Ben Dotson (Kelly) of Houston, TX; James Sharpe of Barcelona, Spain; Emily Mabe (Chris) of Hampstead, MD; and great-grandchildren Eleanor and Mickey Mabe and Daniel Dotson; stepchildren, Edward C. Stokes (Judy) of Delmont, PA; and Polly E. Delauge, Parma, OH; step-grandchildren Brian E. Stokes
(Paula) of Davidson, NC; Jennifer L. Perry (James) of Washington, DC; Stephanie Jackson of Melbourne, FL; Georgia Raven (John) of N. Ridgeville, OH; step-great grandchildren: Delaney and Trevor Stokes, Zachary, Claire, Henry and Ella Perry, Bo Allen and Andrew Raven; brother, Tom Young; sister, Edith Bush and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Floyde is preceded in death by brothers, Arthur, Charles, and Roger Young and sisters Alvaretta Godman, Mary Lou Holcomb, Bernice (Skip) Pearce, and Ruth Sherbeck.
The first of her family to attend college, she won a competitive scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh where she studied education. While a student, she met her first husband, Ward O. Sharpe, and they married in 1944 just before he was sent to the Pacific to fight in World War II. They made a home in Murrysville, PA, until his death in 1977. In 1983 she married Walter G. Stokes who was a devoted husband to her until his death in 2022.
Floyde was a born teacher and spent 25 years teaching third grade in the Franklin Regional schools, always taking a keen interest in her students. Her grandchildren and nieces and nephews remember her as a loving grandmother and aunt, always encouraging their love of reading.
She loved musical theater and for many years worked behind the scenes of the New Kensington (PA) Civic Theater. She was a long-time member of Union Presbyterian Church in Murrysville, PA, and, after moving to Morgantown, Suncrest United Methodist Church where she enjoyed being a member of the United Methodist Women and singing in the choir.
She and Walter were never happier than when they spent time at their "log house" in Clearfield County, PA. They loved hosting the wiener roast at the annual Young family reunion.
In accordance with her wishes, Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with cremation arrangements.
Friends and family will be received at Suncrest United Methodist Church, 479 VanVoorhis Drive, Morgantown, on Thursday, November 20, from 11 a.m. until the time of memorial service at noon with Reverend Larry Buckland officiating.
The family wishes to thank her many caregivers, especially Debbie and Susie, as well as the staff at Sundale Nursing home and Amedysis Hospice Care.
In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to be made in Floyde’s memory to Suncrest United Methodist Church or a charity of your choosing.
Friends and family are encouraged to honor her memory by spending time reading to a little one in their life.
