Frank Gilbert Mitchell

Frank Gilbert Mitchell, affectionately known in the community as “Gibby,” died Sunday, February 12th at Point Manor Personal Care in Pt. Marion, PA. He was born June 23, 1929 in Morgantown, a son of the late Angelo and Pauline Miceli. Gibby was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. He worked for over 40 years as a coal miner for Consolidation Coal Company and served his country in the United States Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus (4th Degree), Westover VFW, Moose, Elks, Sons of Italy, the Beau Monde Dance Club, and the Men’s Club in Pinellas Park, FL. He was an avid Mountaineer fan and loved to tailgate at the Mountaineer football games. He enjoyed cooking and preparing dinners for many charity events. Gibby was a skilled handyman and was always willing to help his family and friends with many of their home projects. Before his wife’s death, Gibby and Grace enjoyed spending their winters in Florida. His pride and joy was playing with and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his step children, Deborah Liberatore West (Don) and Dan Liberatore (Leia); grandchildren, Michele West Brumbaugh (Kurt), Alicia “Peanuts” West Fancher (Jim), Noah Liberatore, Christian Liberatore (Sarah), Sara Liberatore, and Anna Liberatore; great grandchildren, Connor, Kayla, and Anthony Brumbaugh, Zachary and Gianna Grace Fancher, and Isabelle, Olivia, and Mila Liberatore. They all lovingly called Gibby “Pops” and he loved them as his own. Gibby is also survived by his sister, Julia Iannello of Dunbar and a large extended family whom he loved dearly. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Mitchell and his second wife, Grace Liberatore Mitchell; and sisters, June McCune and Gloria Baniak. The family would like to thank Mitsi, Debbie, Renee, and Jacinda and all of his loving caregivers at Point Marion Personal Care and Sara and his caregivers from Amedysis Hospice Care. They did all they could to make Gibby happy and comfortable and shared many laughs and conversations with him. Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown has been entrusted with arrangements. Friends and family will be received at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1 Guthrie Lane, Morgantown, on Wednesday, February 15th from 4-7 PM. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at the church on Wednesday at 6:30 to conclude the evening visitation with Sr. Nancy White, CSJ. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday, February 16th from 10 AM until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM with Rev. Msgr. Anthony Cincinnati, STD, VE as celebrant. Interment will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery with full military funeral rites being conducted.
