With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Barnett Sr, 78, of Morgantown, also known as “Barney,” who left this world on January 18th, 2026 at WV Caring Hospice in Elkins, WV. Barney was born on October 17, 1947 the son of the late Della and Delbert Barnett, Sr.
Barney was a lifetime resident of the Brookhaven community, where he grew up with childhood friends, sharing adventures, and mischief that became cherished stories over the years.
Barney was many things to many people, but to his family he was simply Dad, Grandpa, Brother, and Uncle Jim. He lived a grounded and simple life, with strong friendships, and devotion to those he loved most. And yes, he had a stubborn streak, one that made him who he was and one we all came to love, even when it tested our patience.
He found peace fishing along the waters of Harpers Ferry, where time slowed and worries drifted away with the current. He cherished countless days spent fishing & hunting with his lifelong friends, Buck Poole, and Bob Stansberry. Those friendships were built over a lifetime and meant more to him than words could say.
Above all else, Barney loved his family. His grandchildren and great grandbabies held a special place in his heart, bringing him pride and joy.
He had a deep love for animals and cherished the companionship of his beloved dog, his constant and faithful friend “Baby” and his cats “Della” loving named after his mother, and “Mable” named after his aunt.
Barney faced life with strength, determination, and resilience. He preferred to do things his own way, and that independence, paired with his stubbornness, was part of the charm that made him unforgettable.
He is survived by his sons Jimmy Barnett (Angie), William Barnett, and grandchildren Jordan Barnett (Maddie), Dustin Barnett (Jadyn), Sean Barnett, Landon Barnett, John-Michael George, Kayla George, 6 great-grandchildren, Hudson, Vincent, Vivienne, Mila, Holden, Grady, and sister Carol Kirk (Charles), and many nieces, and nephews who will carry his memory forward through shared stories, laughter, and lessons learned.
In addition to his parents, Barney is preceded in death by loved ones and dear friends who surely welcomed him home, his loving wife Barbara Barnett; brothers, Donald and Delbert Jr (Junior) and most recently passing of his Sister Delores Hovatter (Tom), and his nephews Charles “Chuckie” Kirk and Thomas “Tommy” Hovatter.
Though our hearts ache in his absence, we take comfort in knowing that Barney is at peace and his spirit lives on in every cast line, every hunt, every family gathering, and the love he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In honoring his wishes, cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Hastings Funeral Home.
The family will be holding a private Celebration of Life ceremony at a later time.
The family would like to thank the WV Caring team for their loving care and dedication. In lieu of flowers the family would like to request that a donation be made to WV Caring, 3433 University Ave, Morgantown, WV 26505.
