Lawrence “Larry” Drake, 81, who passed away on May 4, 2026, was released from his earthly body and is now at peace.
Larry dedicated his life to those he loved most—his wife, Cheryl Drake; his children, Jeff, Todd, Chris, and Tawnya Drake; and his grandchildren, Max Drake, Jonah Oliverio, and June Drake, whom he lovingly called his “gifts from God.”
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Larry’s life was marked by his intelligence, his strength of character, and his unwavering commitment to his family. He shared 54 years of marriage with his wife, Cheryl, building a life rooted in love, strength, and dedication.
Born in New Britain, Connecticut, Larry later moved to Southern California. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history before serving in the United States Army from 1972 to 1975. He later earned a master’s degree in public administration and built a respected career as a hospital administrator, where his leadership left a lasting impact.
Larry loved to travel and made it a priority to share those experiences with his family, taking them wherever he could and giving them all he had. He was known for his wit, his unique sense of humor, and his ability to make life lighter, even in difficult moments. His laughter was unmistakable—not because it could be heard, but because it could be seen, a silent laugh that lit up his face and those around him. His favorite song, “What a Wonderful World”, reflected the way he saw and appreciated life.
He had a natural way with people—steady, thoughtful, and fair. He believed in compromise and knew how to bring people together. After long days at work, he came home and turned his attention right back to his family—starting dinner, helping with the dishes, mowing the lawn, and building bicycles in the garage, often cussing the whole time, a memory that will always bring a smile.
He always rose to a challenge and far exceeded expectations, teaching his children through his actions to never quit.
He was always encouraging and supportive, making sure his children knew they could be whatever they wanted to be. He never made them feel anything less than deeply loved—a gift that will stay with them always.
Even in the later stages of Parkinson’s disease, Larry’s sharp mind endured, and he fought to the very end. He could still recall and share random historical facts, a reflection of his lifelong passion for history and his remarkable intellect.
Larry was born to Elliot Drake and Anne Drake. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Maureen; his brothers, Elliot and Allen; and his son-in-law, Sam Oliverio. He is survived by his siblings, Carol, Rick, and Mark.
Larry will be remembered for his quiet strength, his humor, his foul mouth, and the love he gave so freely. His legacy lives on in the lives he shaped and the memories he created.
Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. No public services will be held. A private graveside service at the West Virginia National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, his family asks that you simply share a memory of a time Larry brought a smile to your face.
