M. Kate Clark, 94, longtime resident of Morgantown, passed into Glory July 30, 2025, at Sundale Nursing Home. The only child of Enos and Ona Jones Clark, she was born May 31, 1931, in Weston. She grew up on the family farm in Roanoke, Lewis County. That property is now part of Stonewall Jackson Lake State Resort.
After graduating from Weston High School in 1948, she attended West Virginia Wesleyan College, receiving her bachelor’s degree in home economics. Dr. Clark earned a master’s degree in 1957 and an Ed.D. in 1976; both degrees are from West Virginia University.
Early in her career, Kate taught high school home economics classes in Ohio and Maryland. She joined the WVU Extension Service in 1957 as home demonstration agent in Ritchie and Wood counties. Later, she served as a supervisor in Extension’s Parkersburg Area Office.
A highlight of her work as a consumer education specialist was helping West Virginia bed and breakfast operators organize their statewide association in 1991. She prepared many educational publications distributed throughout the state. As a clothing specialist, she worked with hundreds of 4-H style revue participants during State 4-H Roundups at WVU Jackson’s Mill.
Kate also taught courses in the WVU College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences.
She was active as a member and officer of several professional organizations, including the American Association of University Women, Phi Upsilon home economics honorary, Epsilon Sigma Phi Extension honorary, and the American and West Virginia Family and Consumer Sciences Associations.
A 25-year member of the Suncrest Area Kiwanis Club, Kate served the civic organization as club president and as a division lieutenant governor. She was named a George F. Hixson Fellow for outstanding service to Kiwanis.
Kate was a longtime member of the Suncrest United Methodist Church and the United Women in Faith.
Survivors include cousins Jane Lucal of Sandusky, Ohio; Ann Powers of Rockville, Md.; John and Steve Wickland of Bridgeport; and Maryanne Postlethwait of Jane Lew. She leaves behind close friends, including Betty Alexander, Joyce Bower, the Bravo family, Connie Guzman, and Louise Weber.
A private graveside committal service will be held at the Old Masonic Cemetery in Weston, with the Rev. Larry Buckland officiating. Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted arrangements.
