Mary Elizabeth Davis Jacobs of Morgantown, aged 93 years, died Sunday afternoon, December 12, 2010, at her home. She was born January 25, 1917, the second of four daughters to Samuel Walter and Josephine Smith Davis in Jackson County, West Virginia. She graduated from Gilmore High School in Sandyville, WV in 1934, after which she came to Morgantown to attend West Virginia University. She worked her way through school during the Depression and graduated with the class of 1941 with a degree in Home Economics. During WWII, she held several jobs in Washington, D.C., including one at the U. S. Treasury, and married the late Harold C. Jacobs of Morgantown. They returned to Morgantown, where she taught school in Monongalia County at Everetteville. She found it interesting to work with children. She worked with Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, taught Sunday School at Wesley United Methodist Church where she had been a member since beginning at the university, and raised four children of her own. She taught that station is a poor measure of human achievement, that we are given choices, that the high road is open to those who choose it, and that strong moral values are the essential foundation of good character which allow us to develop our full human potential - and she proved it by example. It was a privilege to have been so tutored. She is survived by her sons, John of Independence, WV and Thomas of Wilmington, NC a daughter, Jane Jacobs Larke of Westover, WV a sister, Orma Evalyn Owens of Perryville, MD five grandchildren, Andrew and Daniel Jacobs, Benjamin Larke, Ashley Larke Archer and Judson Larke and two great-grandchildren, Natalie and Brandon Jacobs.
