Nancy DeViese Gurtis was called Home on January 29, 2026, at the age of 78. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend.
Born on August 22, 1947, in Charlton Heights, West Virginia, to the late James Edward and Dorothy Taylor DeViese, she is survived by her husband, Richard “Dick” Michael Gurtis; sister, Mary “Diane” DeViese Cantrill; brother, James “Jim” Richard DeViese; daughters, Suzanne Gurtis Green, Gigi Gurtis Florin, and Amanda Gurtis Davis; their husbands, Henry John Green, Richard Mark Florin, and Jeremy Austin Davis; and her eight grandchildren, Jackson Edward Green, Sara Rose Green, Taylor Grace Florin, Eva Claire Florin, Richard “Reid” Florin, Emery Rose Davis, Owen Gurtis Davis, and Oliver Jo Davis, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a graduate of West Virginia University, married her college sweetheart, and enjoyed traveling the world as a dedicated U.S. Air Force wife. She was blessed with 57 years of marriage to her devoted husband and called Poquoson home for 48 years while raising their three loving daughters.
She contributed to her community as a committed real estate agent and an active member of the Women’s Club, Poquoson Yacht Club, P.E.O. Sisterhood, and the PTA.
She was a generous hostess with an eye for detail and added a little extra sparkle to everything she did. She will be fondly remembered by her family as the maker of magic and memories, embodying unconditional love, unwavering strength of spirit, and unending generosity. Nancy’s greatest joys were reading, Christmas, and spending time with family and friends—especially her 8 grandchildren.
Her memory will be cherished by loved ones, and her radiant spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the gift of knowing her.
A celebration of life will be held at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, with visitation immediately following from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.
Visitation will continue at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 3346 University Ave, Morgantown, WV 26505 on Tuesday, February 10, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. John P. McDonough officiating. Interment will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Nancy’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association to honor her parents, Jim and Dorothy DeViese, whom she selflessly cared for while they battled the devastating disease.
We take comfort in knowing that Nancy now rests in peace, reunited with loved ones and embraced by God’s grace.
