Nancy Isabel VanGilst Rice

Nancy Isabel VanGilst Rice, a beloved figure in her community and an inspirational educator, passed away peacefully at home on May 26, 2025. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on March 14, 1942, a daughter to the late William and Isabel VanGilst. In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her brother, Peter VanGilst.

Family was everything to Nancy. She was a devoted wife to her husband, A.L. Rice, with whom she shared 55 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life rich in love and laughter, creating memories that will linger in the hearts of her family forever. Nancy and A.L loved their time making memories with the family in Hilton Head Island.

Nancy was also a cherished mother to her daughter, Paige and her husband, Steve, and adored Nana to her granddaughter, Paisley.

Throughout Nancy’s courageous fight, Paige, Paisley and A.L. stood by her side with unwavering strength, grace, and compassion. Every step of the way, Paige offered not only care, but a profound and enduring love that was both a comfort and a light in Nancy’s darkest moments. Paisley brought a joy and innocence that lifted Nancy’s spirit, reminding her of the beauty in every day and the legacy of love she would leave behind.

Family, and especially Paisley, was Nancy’s heart; her hope, her reason, her peace. Their bond was a testament to the power of family and the depth of devotion that carries us through even the most difficult times.

Throughout her distinguished career as a schoolteacher for Mon County Schools, Nancy touched the lives of countless students, guiding them with kindness and passion. She earned a bachelor’s degree from WVU and a master's degree from Auburn University, reflecting her commitment to lifelong learning and education. Nancy dedicated herself to shaping young minds and her impact will be remembered by many.

Beyond her family and career, Nancy was actively involved in her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, throughout her life. Her enthusiasm and dedication to her sorority reflected her vibrant spirit and desire to contribute to her community. She cherished the friendships she built within her sorority, especially her wine and book club ladies.

Nancy's life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to education and her deep commitment to family. She leaves behind a legacy of love and the belief that education and family are the cornerstones of a fulfilling life. Her memory will continue to inspire those who had the honor of knowing her.
