Paul Alex Cappas, 78, of Morgantown, WV, passed away on July 14th at home with his family by his side. He was born in Wheeling, WV, on March 28, 1947, to the late Aloysius and Emma Cappas.
Paul lived a rich and varied life. He served in the U.S. Army and held roles in food service, farming, carpentry, and mining before finding his true calling as a registered nurse. He dedicated over 30 years to nursing, working in area hospitals, home care, and hospice. His heart belonged to the children he cared for in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Ruby Memorial Hospital. Paul was also a devoted coach for his children’s sports teams as they grew up.
In retirement, Paul found joy in nature through gardening and raising honeybees. He was active in the Monongalia County Beekeepers Association and served as president of the West Virginia Beekeepers Association for two years. He also earned certifications as a Master Gardener and Master Naturalist.
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia, and her husband, Tom O’Connell. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth Cappas; daughter, Abbey (and John) Carney of Erie, PA; son, Lucas Cappas (and Janet Ferraro) of Morgantown; grandchildren, Clark and Julia Carney; and many beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation services were provided. Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Saturday, August 9th from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
