Listen to Obituary

Philip Charles Berryhill, 78, of Morgantown, WV, beloved husband of Sylvia, passed away peacefully at his home on February 11, 2026, after a long health battle. Phil was born in Pittsburgh, PA on October 5, 1947, to Rev. Dr. Marshall D. and Madeline C. Berryhill. He enjoyed growing up in Greenville, PA and cherished the friendships he created there.

Phil was a lifelong learner. He first earned his bachelor’s degree at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, followed by two master’s Degrees, the first at California University of Pennsylvania and the second at Penn State University. In 1983, Phil completed a Doctor of Education degree at Penn State University and then he earned an additional master’s degree in 1997 from West Virginia University.

As much as he valued learning, there was nothing he enjoyed more than teaching his students, his family and friends, or even strangers on the beach – whether they wanted to listen or not. He spent much of his early career teaching elementary students in Central Pennsylvania and Florida, followed by a long tenure as a professor at Fairmont State University educating countless future teachers.

Outside the classroom, Phil always enjoyed finding a project to work on around the house, hunting and fishing with some of his best friends, or listening to oldies music because “they have never made music like that since.” He loved supporting his children in all of their endeavors, but out of all of his hobbies, nothing topped how much he enjoyed supporting Penn State with his family. In his later years, you could find Phil in South Carolina cruising the streets in the “little car” or enjoying an active social life with friends and family where he was often the life of the party with a great sense of humor.

Surviving Phil is his wife of 42 years, Sylvia; a daughter, Morgan and her husband Jordan Crapps and their children Marshall, Annie, and a soon-to-be son, of Columbia, SC; a son, Evan of Washington, DC; as well as many nieces, nephews, and in-laws who he loved spending time with. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Marshall and a sister Annette.

Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown on Friday, February 13th from 6-8 PM. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Saturday, February 14th from 9:30 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 AM with Rev. Kevin Cain officiating. Interment will take place at a later time at Fairview Cemetery.
