Virgil Lee Messenger, 87, of Morgantown, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2025. He was born in Morgantown on February 23, 1938, the youngest of ten children born to the late Goldie Kennedy Messenger and William Jennings Messenger. Virgil attended Morgantown High School, and following a brief enlistment in the United States Air Force, he returned to Morgantown where he and his wife of 60 years, Brenda Cunningham Messenger, raised five children, and now have six grandchildren.

He worked for 30 years as a coal miner at Blacksville #2 mine before retiring in 1999. He kept busy after retirement, becoming an avid gardener and landscaper. He and his wife, Brenda, produced a thriving vegetable garden and many beautiful flower gardens. He also enjoyed woodworking and finishing antique furniture. This became one of his favorite hobbies in retirement.

Virgil was a dedicated father, who was always ready to help, even as his children became adults. He loved helping with home improvement projects, car repairs, and moving his children to different parts of the country. He was proud of their accomplishments, and he gave generously of his time and resources.

Virgil is survived by his sons, Robert and Ronald (Denise); and his daughter, Carla Shuman (Jeffrey). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Leeann Messenger, Jesse Messenger, Jacob Messenger (Sierra), Haley Walker (Reid), Allison Messenger, and Chandler Messenger.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda; sons, Richard and Gregory (Susan); and nine siblings.

Virgil will be laid to rest at East Oak Grove Cemetery next to his wife, Brenda and their son, Richard.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
