William Joseph Haggerty

William J. Haggerty, 81, of Morgantown, WV passed peacefully, Sunday March 5, 2017, with his wife of 58 years, Joan, by his side. He was born August 22, 1935, in Scranton, PA, son of the late William P. Haggerty and Leona K. Schlude Haggerty. He graduated from the University of Detroit with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1958 he accepted a position with General Electric as Project Manager for the unmanned Space Program in Philadelphia. He moved to Morgantown in 1976 and worked for the Dept. of Energy, Morgantown Energy Technology Center. He retired in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Joan Haggerty, and this three sons: William F. Haggerty and his wife Terra, of Morgantown, WV, James Haggerty and his wife Renae Tvedt of Tampa, FL, and Timothy Haggerty and his wife Diane Wonsey of Concord, MA; his grandchildren, Courtney Haggerty and Brandon Bever of Masontown, WV, Johanna Haggerty Conway and husband Kyle Conway of Portland, OR, Lauren Haggerty, of Tampa, FL, Emma Rose Wonsey, and Ryan T. Haggerty of Concord, MA; great granddaughter Fern Haggerty Bever and great grandson Walden Haggerty Bever of Masontown, WV; along with several loving nieces and nephews. William was preceded in death by his parents. Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, WV, Thursday, March 9, 2017, from 4-8pm with a scriptural wake service at 7:30pm. Visitation will continue at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Friday, March 10, 2017 at 10am until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11am with Father John V. DiBacco, Jr. as Celebrant. In accordance with the family’s wishes, cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home and a private inurnment will follow at a later date at Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton, PA.
